"Green" goes mainstream: 2005 builder awards for energy-efficiency

Monday, February 20th 2006 11:02:54am

(Markham, January 6, 2006)  More than 200 home builders, energy experts and construction professionals attended the 2005 EnerQuality Excellence Awards Ceremony at the Ontario Building & Renovation Forum in Markham, as EnerQuality Corporation recognized Ontario’s leaders in new, energy-efficient homes.  Peter Love, Ontario’s Chief Energy Conservation Officer, hosted the Awards Ceremony.

“The award winners have made outstanding progress, helping to conserve energy and improve air quality in Ontario,” said Mr. Love.  “In 2005, energy-efficiency became a highly sought upgrade in new homes.  There was a 200% growth in energy-efficient homes this year, with 200 energy-efficient homes built in 2004 to over 600 in 2005 (in terms of the number of homes tested and labeled).”

“Ontario’s housing market is changing for the better,” said Lenard Hart, Director of Business Development for EnerQuality Corporation.  “We’ve had a record number of new, energy-efficient homes in Ontario.”

New homes built in 2005 included 81 R2000 homes, 448 EnerGuide rated homes, and 83 ENERGY STAR® certified homes.  “This will save a total of 83,000 kwh of electricity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1,224 tonnes in 2006, and each year after,” added Mr. Love.

Among the 11 awards that EnerQuality presented this year, there were two new awards¯the ENERGY STAR Industry Leader Award and the ENERGY STAR Builder of the Year Award.

“In 2005, we piloted a federal new housing initiative called ENERGY STAR for New Homes to fill the growing need for recognizing and supporting energy-efficiency in Ontario’s production built housing market,” explains Mr. Hart.  “I’m pleased to say that this new program has generated much interest among both home builders and home buyers.”

2005 Hall of Fame Recipient
(2 Recipients)

Peter Love, Ontario Power Authority

Peter Love has worked for EnerQuality since its inception. He was the first president of the company and is responsible for turning the R-2000 program into an elite builder program by ensuring that only the builders who are committed to it can use its name.

Among his many achievements are the many industry sponsors that support EnerQuality, the establishment of a Builder Council to ensure that those involved have ownership and influence over the program, and the creation of both the EnerGuide and ENERGY STAR programs.

In March, 2005, Mr. Love became Ontario’s first Chief Energy Conservation Officer and has issued certificates of achievement to builders who have made significant contributions to energy conservation.

Susan Woolsey, Ontario Home Builder’s Association

Susan Woolsey has worked in the building industry since 1978, starting with Markborough Properties.  In 1997, she began working at the Ontario Home Builder’s Association (OHBA), and in 1998 she took on the part-time role of Manager of Operations for EnerQuality.

She is now EnerQuality’s Director of Operations, but is still only part time because she spends much of her year organizing events like the Builder Forum, the OHBA Awards, organizing tours, and the supporting renovator’s council for the OHBA.

Among her most significant achievements are the establishment of these awards, creating an R-2000 training program, and building strong relationships with all of the builders that have taken on the R-2000 challenge.

R-2000 certified homes offer high energy-efficiency and advanced indoor air quality by incorporating tighter construction, higher insulation values and mechanical ventilation.  An independent, third party expert inspects each house to ensure that it meets these requirements before it can be certified as an R-2000 home. Only licensed R-2000 builders who have been trained by the Government of Canada can build R-2000 homes.

EnerGuide for New Houses is a consumer empowerment rating system used to measure the energy use and efficiency of a whole house.  In this program, blueprints are analyzed to assess their energy-efficiency to generate ratings out of 100.  For every point rise on the scale, more money is saved on utility bills.

ENERGY STAR® for New Homes is a label given to homes that meet balanced, whole-house, energy-efficiency standards, guaranteeing their owners significant energy savings.  New homes that receive the ENERGY STAR label are 40 percent more energy efficient than those built to the minimum Ontario building code standards.
