Acting Mayor Rick Johnson to test Pickering’s air quality

Friday, May 26th 2006 4:32:53pm

Pickering Acting Mayor Rick Johnson along with researchers from the University of Toronto and the Clean Air Partnership will be testing Pickering’s air quality. This air quality sampling will take place on June 1 at 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Strouds Lane and Whites Road.

Air quality sampling examines the effects of vehicular traffic on local air quality.  Samples will be taken along a walking route beginning near traffic and ending near a local green space, to illustrate how some air pollutants are related to region wide sources while others can depend on local sources within communities such as busy roadways.

They will be measuring ultra fine particles (PM0.1) using a P trak sampler and particulate matter (PM2.5) using a dust track sampler.  These particles are consistently linked as having a significant negative effect on human health.
